Edna Clyde

1914 ~ 2010

Edna Thornock Clyde, devoted mother and grandmother, died August 20, 2010 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born November 25, 1914, in Bloomington, Idaho to Matthew William Thornock and Rachel Elvira Hulme. She married Wilford Cornell Clyde, April 20, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, December 13, 1951.

Edna spent her early years in Bloomington, Idaho and attended public schools there as well as in Paris, Idaho until the age of 16. After her mother's passing in 1930 she moved to Logan, Utah to live with her Aunt Edna Hulme Linford. She graduated from Logan High School and attended the Utah Agriculture College where she met her future husband. Together they made their permanent home in Springville, Utah where they raised their two children, nurtured their grandchildren, served in the LDS Church, traveled the world including spending winters in Hawaii and devoted endless service to the Clyde Companies and to the Association of General Contractors of America. Cornell passed away in March 1997.

Edna's entire life was dedicated to caring for her children and spoiling her grandchildren. Her travels to Hawaii brought a deep love for the Polynesian culture and people. Her signature trademark was the color pink, except when it came to BYU sports when she wore true blue. She rarely missed a BYU football game and was a loyal member of the BYU Cougar Club. Edna held positions in the local PTA and in the Young Women's organization for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She also served in the women's auxiliary of Riverside Country Club. She was an avid gardener and gave special care to hundreds of roses cultivated and grown by her and Cornell for over 50 years.

She is survived by her two children Carma and her husband, Kenneth Russell, Salt Lake City; Richard and his wife, Patricia Taylor, Orem; 11 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Matthew William and Rachel Thornock; sisters Ione Thornock Hymas and Phoebe Thornock; five brothers, William, Ralph, Ross, Leon and Louis Thornock.

Funeral services will be held Sat., August 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the Springville Stake Center, 245 South 600 East, Springville, Utah. The family will receive friends Fri., August 27, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, and Sat. at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.

The family expresses gratitude to the staff and physical therapists at Brighton Gardens especially Augustine, George and Kelly, whom Mother referred to as her boys. To Marilyn, for her friendship and keeping Mother's hair well groomed. To Bruce and Phil at Haven Health Care, for their kind and compassionate care. And to Jenny, an Angel who came into our home and kept Mother singing until the end. Special thanks to the nurses and CNA's in ICU and on the 8th floor of LDS Hospital. Their dedicated service helped Mother get through those last few weeks. Mandy, who Mother had a special bond with, for the extra special time she spent with her. Also deep gratitude to Dr. James Pearl for his compassionate care and being there to help us through this difficult time. Our family will be forever grateful.

Missionary work was always important to Edna and Cornell. They were especially proud of their 12 missionaries and the many others they helped support. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the LDS General Missionary Fund.
